Five Ways To Protect Your Home This Winter
1. Insulate your pipes- When the temperature outside drops below the freezing mark, any exposed pipes are at risk of freezing. When this happens, often times broken pipes are the result. This can be really costly if you do not catch the problem early. Water damage can be an expensive problem, not the mention the high cost of water extraction and restoration. So wrap those pipes before it is too late.
2. Get your basement ready- Many of us have crawl space or basements in our homes. This can be a huge source of moisture build up, because the area is below ground level. In order to keep moisture out of your basement and to protect your home from water damage, install a dehumidification unit. This will keep the moisture out and keep your home high and dry throughout the winter months.
3. Clean out your garden hoses- Make sure to turn off and properly disconnect your garden hoses during the winter months. By leaving them out and turned on, they could burst very quickly, causing your lawn or decks to flood. Also make sure to blow them out and roll them up. Storing them out of the elements will also keep them safe from damage.
4. Clean out those gutters- When gutters become clogged with leaves and other debris this can cause water to build up. When this water freezes it can become very heavy, causing your gutters to fall to the ground. This could even break windows, if the ice lands closer to the home.
5. Take care of any roof leaks- A leaky roof in the winter time can be a serious problem. Just a small leak can turn into something much bigger if gone unnoticed. So before it gets too cold to venture outside, make sure to give you roof a look over. Using heat tapes on roof
