Minturn,
CO - November 13,
2003 - While many people believe that “Mold” is just another four-letter
word, Gary Gilman, SteamMaster Cleaning and Restoration president,
owner operator, and Certified Mold Remediator (CMR) continues to
investigate the best ways to bring the treatment of Mold to a higher
standard of efficiency and effectiveness. During the week of November
3, Gary participated in the American Conference of Governmental
Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) conference on Mold Remediation: The
National
Quest for Uniformity Symposium . Symposium speakers included
Doctors, Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH) as well as representatives
from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), New York Dept. of Health (NYDOH), Occupational Safety
and Health Administration (OSHA), National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health (NIOSH) etc. as well as individual remediation
contractors.
The
focus of the symposium was to discuss current and pending standards
of care. Topics of discussion included:
- Remediation
and drying of crawl spaces and attics
- The
erection of proper containment and negative air pressures
- Failed
Exterior Insulation Finishing Systems
- Building
science and construction defects
- Hidden
mold and aero-biological pathways in buildings
- Anti-fungal
agents and their role in mold remediation
- Remediation
considerations regarding immune compromised patients
- The
use of moisture meters/thermal imaging cameras during water damage
clean up
- Worker

- Cryo
Cleaning “Dry Ice Blasting”
Their
charge was to address industry practice, known health effects of
mold, and pending legislation associated with mold contamination
and remediation. Bringing associations, agencies, and remediation
professionals together will be the basis for formulating ACGIH “Best
Practices Standard' for mold remediation. The
meeting included a lengthy presentation of the new IICRC S-520
Mold Remediation Standard by the committee chairman Larry Cooper.
This
new standard, recently completed, is expected to have a significant
impact on the industry and will be available for purchase by the
end of November 2003.
